Christa Théret

Biography

Christa Théret (born 25 June 1991) is a French actress, best known for her roles as Lola in LOL (Laughing Out Loud) and as Andrée Heuschling in Renoir. As a child, Théret aspired to be a teacher and then to become an actress. Théret's acting career began at the age of 11; while playing in a school playground, she was noticed by a casting director, who then hired her for the film The Axe, in 2005. In this film, directed by Costa-Gavras, she plays Betty, the daughter of Bruno and Marlène Davert (played by José Garcia and Karin Viard). In 2007, she played Julie, a gothic teenager, in the film Et toi, t'es sur qui? (selected at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category and for the Caméra d'or). While enrolled at the Lycée Jules Ferry in Paris, she dropped out of school at the age of 17. In 2008, she had her first big break with the lead role in Lisa Azuelos' blockbuster LOL (Laughing Out Loud), co-starring with Sophie Marceau. The commercial success of this film brought her to the attention of the general public, and she was nominated for a César for Best Promising Actress. From April to June 2009, she shot The Village of Shadows, the directorial debut of Fouad Benhammou, followed in October by Le Mariage de chiffon, directed by Jean-Daniel Verhaeghe (director of Le Grand Meaulnes). This was the 5th episode of the Contes et nouvelles du XIXe siècle season, broadcast in April 2010 on France 2. At the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010, she starred in Bertrand Blier's new film, The Clink of Ice, alongside Jean Dujardin and Albert Dupontel. In 2010, she took on a series of projects, starting with Christophe Sahr's first film, Free Way, with Johan Libéreau and Isabelle Candelier. She also starred in Lars Blumers' Mike, with Marc-André Grondin and Éric Elmosnino. In 2012, she starred in The Man Who Laughs as Déa. In 2013, she played the lead in Renoir, directed by Gilles Bourdos, and appeared in Marguerite, by Xavier Giannoli. Since 2013, she has acted in numerous films including Olivier Loustau's The Boss's Daughter (2015) and Olivier Assayas's Non-Fiction (2018). Théret featured in Foals' 2019 music video for the track "Exits", as well as Yung Lean's "My Agenda". In 2023, she released a poem set to music, Gare Saint-Lazare. In the same year, she starred in Bertrand Mandico's Conann. In the future, she wants to be a director. She is also writing her first short film. Apart from acting, Théret writes experimental poetry, which she illustrates with her own drawings.
